There comes a point in many relationships when it comes time to meet the parents.  This can be a terrifying moment because if the parents don’t like you, your relationship will face a new, often insurmountable obstacle.  The key to meeting the parents is all about making a good first impression.  This means being affable, interesting, showing you care for their son and looking your best.

This means choosing an outfit that is proper, approachable and pretty.  No low cut blouses, micro-minis or backless dresses.  Focus on looking “Mom appropriate,” because it is ultimately her opinion that matters most.

This means wearing a dress.  If it’s a backyard barbecue, a casual cotton dress with simple sandals.  If it’s a brunch, a summer dress with a cardigan and kitten heels.  And if it’s a dinner date, a cocktail dress and medium height pumps are in order.

Slub Silk Penelope Dress (J.Crew, $295)

The J.Crew boycott is over, I can fight it no longer.  This dress is both interesting and ladylike.  The grey color is very hot for Spring and the shape will be flattering on many body types.  And while a high neck isn’t traditionally sexy, if you add a wispy, loose updo and the right accessories you can make it a little naughty.

Classy but sexy, these open toe t-straps are a fun compliment to a professional dress.  I also love the bright purple color.

I love the contrast of the grey dress, the purple shoes and the soft yellow-green tinted jewelry.  It’s a vibrant color combination that has edge but is still very sophisticated.  And this jewelry would transition beautifully to professional or even casual attire.

Dressing to ‘meet the parents’ can be a scary proposition, but if you know what aesthetic you are trying to project.  This outfit is sophisticated and feminine without being too severe or just inappropriate.  Wow your significant other’s parents with your personality and your style.
