Every Spring, men in bowties and women in sundresses descend upon the Great Meadow for the Virginia Gold Cup Races. Affectionately known as Gold Cup, the race is a steeplechase as opposed to a derby or stakes like the Preakness, but most people attend Gold Cup for the networking and the libations not the horse race.

Few Beltway events provide for such epic people watching as Gold Cup.  Some ladies have the fashion down to a science but others, not so much.  (1st Rule: No capri pants at Gold Cup, or ever.) Below I have provided two looks for Gold Cup: one traditional and one modern.  Though I would say that the traditional is more the way to go, as most of the attendees do their best upper crust. Mid-Atlantic, Blair Waldorf/Chuck Bass impressions at Gold Cup.

Also a side note of warning, if you hate critter pants like I hate critter pants, prepare yourself for a barrage of embroidery.  Not to mention madras print, bowties, floral prints and popped collars.  You’ve been warned.

Liz Claiborne Blush Cardigan (Bonton, $56)

Liz Claiborne Cardigan (Bonton, $56)

It might be warm, it might be chilly, but either way a well chosen cardigan is a gold cup essential.  This Liz Claiborne model is breezy and bright.

Hache Cotton Dress (Saks, $495)

Hache Cotton Dress (Saks, $495)

When choosing a traditional sundress you want something with a fuller A-line in a light fabric (cotton, chiffon, voile).  I chose this brightly colored number because it has a traditional feel but it could also be worn to work (white blazer, brown belt).  If you want to go even more traditional try a floral, polka dot or pastel dress.

Mystic Pearl Sandal (Nordstrom, $60)

Mystic Pearl Sandal (Nordstrom, $60)

Since Gold Cup is held in a field, heels are strongly discouraged (2nd Rule: Kitten Heels will only leave you up to your ankles in mud).  These sandals have a metallic tone and a faux pearl detail that gives them something extra feminine.

Wide Straw Hat (Bergdorf, $290)

Wide Straw Hat (Bergdorf, $290)

If you’ve ever wanted an excuse to buy a fabulous hat, this is it.  Being a simple girl, I like a nice wide brimmed straw hat but feel free to go wild.  And if you want to save a little bit of money, Newport News makes a low-priced alternative.

Add a simple straw clutch and a mother-of-pearl flower ring, and you’re all set to sip champagne and nibble on canapes while chatting with your fellow blue bloods.  But if you want something a bit more modern (I would), you can look for a more refined silhouette and a few less frills.

Printed Deco Dress (Banana Republic, $98)

Printed Deco Dress (Banana Republic, $98)

Still summery and chic, this abstract printed dress is a modern twist on the traditional floral.  But it’s bright colors and simple shape make it perfect for an outdoor event.

Woven Leather Belt (Banana Republic, $59)

Woven Leather Belt (Banana Republic, $59)

Because the dress nips in at the waist, you need something to keep it from looking blah.  This woven belt in a complimenting color will add structure and style.

CocoBelle Coral Sandal (Piperlime, $88)

CocoBelle Coral Sandal (Piperlime, $88)

Shoes don’t always have to be neutral.  Even when wearing a brightly colored dress, you can still wear a colorful sandal.  These fun flip-flops are the perfect summer accessory.

Add a wood bangle or coral cuff and a cool wood and burlap clutch and you’re ready to go.  This outfit exemplifies the kind of California chic that is sure to make you stand out in the crowd.
